Indian Minister of External Affairs Mr Salman Khurshid is scheduled to make an official visit to Sri Lanka this week.

Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs Mr. Karunathilake Amunugama said that the Indian Minister may discuss the problem of poaching by Indian fishermen in the Sri Lankan territories by illegally crossing the Sri Lankan maritime boundaries.

It has been found that these Indian fishermen take large quantities of fish resources from the Sri Lankan territory using illegal bottom trawling methods and export them to European countries.  It has been found that more than 400 Indian fishing vessels illegally enter Sri Lankan territory daily.

Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development said that as per International Maritime Laws, poaching in Sri Lankan territorial waters can be controlled by seizing the fishing vessels that cross the Sri Lankan maritime boundary. A spokesman from the Ministry said that they have left with no other solution than confiscating the Indian trawlers that exploit maritime resources in Sri Lankan territorial waters.

The spokesman also said that India and Sri Lanka established a Working Group to reach an amicable settlement to the fishermen's issue. He said that the Joint Working Group has not met for a long time despite the ministry's request to convene it as early as possible, after its first meeting was held in Colombo two years ago and the next meeting has to be held in India. The Indian authorities have failed to convene this meeting for more than 18 months. (niz)
