Mosquito control week from today

A national week of mosquito control has been announced from today until the 13th of this month.
The Ministry of Health informed that the assistance of all the Ministries coming under the dengue task force will be obtained for implementation of the programmes that had been prepared to be carried out this week. The Ministry said that with the advent of the Northeast Monsoon rains there is a threat of rapidly increasing the density of dengue mosquitoes.
The Ministry pointed out that cleaning of the environment will be the main task of the mosquito control week. They said that the assistance of the dengue control committees, health staff, the police the tri forces and the students will also be obtained for the mosquito control activities.
33,608 dengue patients had been identified last year and of them 150 patients died. This year 24,757 dengue patients have been identified so far and 68 of them have died.
Minister Maithreepala Sirisena said that compared to the last year the death toll relating to dengue has been reduced by about 50 percent up to September this year and the Ministry gives priority to save the lives of dengue patients. The Minister also emphasized that cleaning activities should be continuously carried out to prevent the spread of mosquitoes. (niz)
