6,700 arrested in Tamil Nadu

Indian Police arrested over 6,700 extremist and pro tiger terrorist elements in Tamil elements yester including Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko at 135 places including in Chennai, Coimbatore, Tirupur and Madurai for resorting to rail roko agitations across the State. The protesters were demanding the Government of India to totally boycott the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Sri Lanka.
However, essential services, public transport, educational institutions, banks, government and private establishments functioned normally, although trains were delayed at several places with slogan-shouting agitators barging into railway stations to stop train services. (niz)
