Yala National Park has become very attractive to the foreign
tourists and the Park is reported to be overcrowded during the entire
year. In order to ease the congestion the Wildlife Department has
launched a programme to develop other national parks countrywide.
Director General of Wildlife Conservation H. D. Ratnayake said that
about 1,000 foreign tourists visit the Yala National Park each day, and
it has become the most popular of 22 parks in the country. He said that
some days the Yala Parak becomes unable to accommodate all the visitors.
Ratnayake said that arrangements have also been made to expand the
Yala National Park extending its land area and further developing the
facilities available at present.
He said that steps are also being taken
to improve facilities in several other Parks such as Gal Oya, Wasgomuwa,
Maduru Oya and Somawathiya in order to divert the tourists to these
parks as well. (niz).
