Elections to the Northern Provincial
Council will be held as it was announced earlier in the month of
September and it will be held under the prevailing constitutions
provisions. Although it was planned to amend the constitution and hold
the elections as per consensus arrived by the Parliamentary Select
Committee that has been appointed, refusal of the Tamil National
Alliance to participate in the PSC process has hindered this process.
There are various opinions within the
United People’s Freedom Alliance about the 13th Amendment and this
matter will be addressed separately as soon as possible.
The provincial council elections for the Eastern Province and other provinces were held under the present constitution in which Tamil National Alliance participated accepting the unitary status of the country and they are now functioning in the Eastern Province as members of the opposition accepting the unitary status of the country.
This was stated by Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa addressing the cabinet decisions announcement media conference held at the Information Department auditorium Wednesday (22).
The Minister said that it was the United National Party which introduced the provincial council system under the Indo-Lanka agreement. It is the opinion of all political parties that some of the provisions of the 13th Amendment are not suitable for a small country like Sri Lanka and it needs to be modified. (niz)
